Holiness, 7/17/10

Holiness is a difficult subject as in the process of learning how to live a sanctified life one has to have a very close understanding and relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the perfection of holiness and sanctification.   Of course, that also happens to be the ultimate goal as per Eph.4:1-16 (15)

Ephesians 4
1I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,  2With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;   3Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.   4There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;   5One Lord, one faith, one baptism,   6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.   7But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.   8Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.  9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?   10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)   11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;   12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:   13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:   14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;  15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:   16From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.  Romans 6:18-20 (in Context) Romans 6 (Whole Chapter)  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.  Romans 6:21-23 (in Context) Romans 6 (Whole Chapter)  Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God., 2 Corinthians 7:1-3 (in Context) 2 Corinthians 7
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:23-25
To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.  1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 (in Context) 1 Thessalonians 3 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.  1 Thessalonians 4:6-8  For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.  Hebrews 12:9-11#
Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:  Hebrews 12:13-15

So what is True Holiness.  It is a list of don’t or do’s?  Perhaps it is both.  Perhaps it is a growth.  A perfect child at 4 may not be a perfect child at 12 if doing the same things.  Holiness may include the word “Perfecting”

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.  2 Corinthians 7:1-3   For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:  Ephesians 4:11-13.

Perhaps it is the work of the Holy Spirit working in us to will and to do His good pleasure and like dead leaves in the spring they will be pushed off by the new green leaves as the warmth of the Sun touches the tree.  Perhaps being a Holy Man can never be a personal observation but must be validated by others to each other.

Key Words in Eph.4:1-16: Discuss.
2, Humility.  3, Unity and Peace.  4, One Body.  5. One Baptism.  8. Gifts.  11. Ministries.  12. Perfecting.  13, Unity of the Faith.  Perfect Man. Stature of Christ.  14, Bad Doctrine.  15, Truth in Love,
Grow up into Christ.  16, Fitly joined, compacted, every joint, every part, to be built up in LOVE.

So when our Lord Jesus said He would build His Church, what was He talking about.   Matthew 16:18 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”  Matthew 16:17-19.   What was our Lord’s definition concerning His Church?  What kind of Church did He want us to build?  What does it look and smell like according to the New Testament?  Are changes needed?  What might they be?
